Cannabis gummies are a popular snack, as they’re conveniently portable, easy to dose, and super tasty. Not only that, they come together in just minutes, requiring only a handful of ingredients. Homemade gummies are such a popular treat that there are even cooking classes dedicated to making them.
They’re made from natural ingredients, and without a ton of sugar. You can easily customize the dosage and the flavour to your own tastes. If you make your own alcohol-based tincture or cannabis oil at home, you can even use different strains of cannabis to achieve different effects. Keep in mind that cannabutter is not suitable for making gummies, you will need a tincture to make them.
The biggest issue when it comes to making cannabis gummies is calculating the dosage per treat. There are several dosage calculators available online that can help you figure out how much THC/CBD are in your homemade treats. You can also test how one gummy makes you feel, and go from there.
While this recipe calls for mixing the tincture with the juice, if you know how many drops is best for your buzz, you can always add the desired number to each mould before pouring the juice mixture into them for a more accurate idea of dosing.
With all this in mind, here’s how to make your own cannabis gummies at home.
Ingredients and supplies
1/2 cup 100% fruit juice
3 tbsp gelatin
1 tbsp raw honey
1-2 tsp cannabis tincture
Measuring cups and spoons
In a small saucepan, slowly heat the juice over low heat. You want the liquid to get warm, but not boil. When the juice is warm, add your tincture.
Add the gelatin, slowly whisking it into the liquid mixture until it is thoroughly blended into the juice and there are no lumps. Continue whisking until the gelatin has completely dissolved. If you find that the mixture thickens up too fast, don’t worry, the heat will liquefy it again.
Add honey, and whisk until thoroughly dissolved.
Give your mix a quick taste. If you find it’s not sweet enough or the cannabis flavour is too strong for your liking, add an extra tablespoon of raw honey.
Pour the liquid mixture into a glass measuring cup with a spout, for easy pouring into the silicone moulds.
Carefully pour the mixture into the gummy moulds. Alternatively, you can use a dropper to fill the moulds, but it will take longer and your mixture might set too quickly.
Place the gummy moulds in the freezer for 15 minutes. When the time is up, remove from the freezer, pop the gummies out of the mould, and enjoy. You can also leave the gummies in the fridge for about 3-4 hours to fully set, if you don’t have enough space in the freezer or have some extra time on your hands.
Test your gummies by eating one and waiting an hour. This will give you a general idea of how strong each treat is for future dosing.
Once gelled, your gummies will hold their shape at room temperature, but for a longer shelf life, keep them in the fridge until you’re ready to eat them. For the best effect, enjoy within two weeks of making.
There are plenty of cute silicone moulds available online or at candy or craft stores. If you don’t want to invest in a mould, however, you can simply pour the liquid into a glass baking tray or loaf pan and cut into squares.
Other recipes call for less gelatin, but result in a much less firm gummy. These treats have that store-bought gummy feel where they’re soft enough to squeeze, but bounce right back to their original shape.
This recipe can easily be doubled for batch cooking your treats.
Using 2 tsp of tincture (500mg/30mL) results in just over 1mg of THC/CBD per gummy bear, as this recipe made 142 mini bears.
Ensure you clearly label your treats, and keep them out of reach of children and pets.
